Christianity is not biblical

This website shows that Christianity is not supported by the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh). Here I will show that the claims that there are prophecies about Jesus in the Tanakh are false. The Hebrew Bible does not mention Jesus or teach that he is God. Each page on this site will talk about a claim that is made by the New Testament or missionaries, on each one I will show that these claims are false.

I did not make this website to upset anyone but to help people who are searching for truth and meaning to understand that the Hebrew Bible is a separate book from the New Testament and that not all religious claims should be taken as fact. It also explains why Jews, Noahides, Yahwists and others do not believe in Jesus even though they share the same scripture. I myself am Yahwist but this website is for anyone interested in the subject.

Isaiah 7 what is it about?

Isaiah 7 is quoted by Matthew and is used by missionaries, however, there is no clear prophecy about Jesus in the text.

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the LORD Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, the young woman is with child, and she will bear a son, and shall call his name Immanu-El. 15 Butter and honey shall he eat, when he shall know how to refuse the evil, and choose the good. 16 For before the child shall know how to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread shall be deserted.

Verse 14 says that God will give Ahaz a sign, this means that Ahaz will see the sign which is the child. Focus on verse 16, the child that Ahaz will see is a sign about 2 enemy kings he is worried about, when he sees the sign he will know that the land of the kings he dreads shall be deserted, this is clearly about something that already happened before Jesus was born. Verse 15 makes it clear that this child was a normal human being who did not always know right from wrong so this can’t be Jesus who Christians say is God and does not sin.

Isaiah 53 who is the servant?

Isaiah 53 should be read in context with its surrounding verses. The surrounding verses talk about Israel, not Jesus as the context is about the suffering of Israel as a result of the Babylonian exile. Isaiah 52 speaks about Israel and there is no indication that the subject changes going into Isaiah 53.

Isaiah 52:13 Behold, my servant shall prosper, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.14 As many were astonished at you; saying His appearance is too marred to be that of a man, and his forms to be that of the sons of men; 15 So shall he startle many nations; kings shall shut their mouths at him; for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they perceive.

Isaiah 53:1 Who has believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2 For he grew up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground; he had no form nor comeliness that we should look at him, there was no countenance that we should desire him.3 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with sickness; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.4 Surely he has borne our sicknesses, and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, struck by God, and afflicted.5 But he was wounded because of our transgressions, he was bruised because of our iniquities; his sufferings were that we might have peace; and by his injury we are healed.6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.7 He was oppressed, but he humbled himself and opened not his mouth; he was brought like a lamb to the slaughter, and like a sheep, that is dumb before its shearers, he did not open his mouth. 8 By oppression and false judgment was he taken away; and of his generation who considered? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people.9 And they made his grave among the wicked, and his tomb among the rich; although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the LORD to crush him by sickness; if his soul shall consider it a reward for guilt, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the purpose of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.11 He shall see the labor of his soul, and shall be satisfied; by his knowledge did my servant justify the righteous One to the many, and did bear their iniquities.12 Therefore I will give him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the plunder with the strong; because he has poured out his soul to death; and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Isaiah 52:13-15 is God speaking, predicting the exaltation and triumph of Israel and the astonishment of the Gentiles at Israel’s triumph.

From Isaiah 53:1 onwards it is the astonished Gentile nations speaking about Israel, God’s servant.

In verse 1 the Gentiles admit that the arm of the LORD has been revealed to Israel. Other verses in the Tanakh support this, one of them is Exodus 6:6 “Therefore say to the people of Israel, I am the LORD and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you from their slavery, and I will redeem you with a outstretched arm, and with great judgments; 7 And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God; and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.”

In verses 3 and 4 the Gentiles admit that the servant suffered because of their iniquities. Christian versions of the Bible like to translate the “from our iniquities” מפשענו in verse 5 as “for our iniquities” which sounds more like the sacrificial death of Jesus.

Isaiah 53:8 says the servant was cut off from the land of the living. Christians insist this must refer to the death of Jesus as a nation cannot die, but this refers to the Jews being expelled from Judah during the Babylonian exile. When the Jews were expelled, the nation of Israel was cut off. This imagery is used in Ezekiel, when the nation of Israel is in exile, they are symbolically dead:

Ezekiel 37:9 And he said to me, Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the LORD God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.10 And I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, a very large army.11 Then he said to me, son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel; behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost; we are clean cut off. 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.13 And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up from your graves, 14 And I shall put my spirit in you, and you shall live, and I shall place you in your own land; then shall you know that I, the LORD, have spoken it, and performed it, says the LORD.

Isaiah 53:9 says the servant had done no violence and spoken no falsehood. The Jews had done nothing to cause the persecution they suffered. The Babylonian exile was the result of imperialist expansion and later persecution in Europe was caused by Christians who saw the Jews as Christ killers who rejected their messiah.

Isaiah 53:10 says that the servant shall see seed (have children) and that his days will be prolonged. This does not fit Jesus who died at about age 30 and had no children. Verse 10 also says the servant will see it is a reward for guilt. This fits the nation of Israel who has sinned against God many times but not Jesus who was supposedly sinless.

Israel is the servant

The nation of Israel is named as God’s servant many times in the Tanakh, especially in the book of Isaiah:

lsaiah 41:8 But you, Israel, are my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend.9 You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called you from its farthest corners, and said to you, You are my servant; I have chosen you, and not cast you away.

Isaiah 44:1 Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen; 2 Thus says the LORD who made you, and formed you from the womb, who will help you; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and you, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.

Isaiah 45:4 For Jacob my servant’s sake, and Israel my elect, I have called you by your name; I have surnamed you, though you have not known me.

Isaiah 49:1 Listen, O islands, to me; and listen, you people, from far; the LORD has called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother has he made mention of my name.2 And he has made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver he hid me.3 And said to me, You are my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.

Jeremiah 30:10 Therefore do not fear, O my servant Jacob, says YHWH; nor be dismayed, O Israel; for, behold, I will save you from afar, and your seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be quiet and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.

All this supports the Jewish and the Yahwist viewpoint that Jesus is not the subject in Isaiah 53. You could argue that this supports Jesus allegorically but not as prophecy like the missionaries argue.

Hosea 11

The author of Matthew claims that Hosea 11 speaks about Jesus, but when it is read in context it clearly speaks about Israel

Hosea 11:1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

The verse clearly says it’s about Israel and doesn’t mention Jesus. Verse 2 further disproves the claim that the chapter speaks about Jesus, reading both of the verses together clarifies the context:

Hosea 11:1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt. 2 As they called them, so they went from them; they sacrificed to the Baalim, and burned incense to carved idols.

Verse 2 confirms the chapter is about Israel because it mentions the sins of Israel who were worshipping the Baalim at the time. This would not make sense if the verse was a prophecy about Jesus, did Jesus worship the Baalim?

Jeremiah 31

Jeremiahs new covenant is not the New Testament

Jeremiah 31:27 And it shall come to pass, that just as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to break down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, said the LORD. 28 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.29 But every one shall die for his own iniquity; every man who eats sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.30 Behold, the days come, says the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah; 31 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; my covenant which they broke, although I was their master, says the LORD; 32 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, says the LORD, I will put my Torah in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.33 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD; for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will no longer remember their sin.

This prophecy is not about Jesus, it still remains unfulfilled. Verse 32 states the details of this new covenant with Israel and Judah (not the church). The difference in the covenants is that in the new covenant, God will put the Torah into the inward parts of the people of Israel and Judah and write it on their hearts, which contrasts with the former covenant where they had to learn and study. There is nothing in this prophecy that says the laws have changed. The biggest clue that this prophecy is about the future and hasn’t been fulfilled is in verse 33 where it says that the people will not need to teach each other to know God because everyone will know God. This clearly has not been fulfilled yet, people still have to teach each other to know God.

Psalm 22

Psalms are poems or hymns to God. They are not usually prophecy and none of the Psalms clearly point to Jesus.

Psalm 22 is often called the resurrection Psalm and it is claimed as a prophecy about Jesus, but when read as a literal reading it is a petition to God by a Psalmist who has problems with enemies which is a common complaint in Psalms.

Psalm 22:2 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my loud complaint? 3 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but you do not hear; and in the night, and I have no rest.4 But you are holy, O you who are enthroned on the praises of Israel.5 Our fathers trusted in you; they trusted, and you saved them .6 They cried to you, and were saved; they trusted in you, and were not 7. But I am a worm, and not a man; scorned by men, and despised by the people.8 All those who see me mock me; they move the lip, they shake their head, saying,9 He trusted on the LORD that he would save him; let him save him, seeing he delights in him.10 But you are he who took me out of the womb; you made me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts.11 I was cast upon you from the womb; you are my God from my mother’s belly.12 Do not be far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.13 Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me.14 They open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and a roaring lion.15 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.16 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaves to my jaws; and you lay me down in the dust of death.17 For dogs surround me; the assembly of the wicked encircle me; they seize my hands and my feet like a lion.18 I can count all my bones; they look and stare at me.19 They divide my garments among them, and cast lots for my clothing.20 But you, O LORD, be not far from me; O my strength, hasten to my help.21 Save my soul from the sword; my only one from the power of the dog. 22 Save me from the lion’s mouth; for you have answered me from the horns of the wild oxen. 23 I will declare your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation will I praise you. 24 You who fear the LORD, praise him; all you the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all you the seed of Israel. 25 For he has not despised nor loathed the affliction of the afflicted; nor has he hidden his face from him; but when he cried to him, he heard. 26 My praise shall be of you in the great congregation; I will pay my vows before those who fear him.27 The humble shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD. May your heart live for ever!28 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the LORD; and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. 29 For the kingdom is the LORD’s and He is ruler over the nations. 30 All the fat ones of the earth shall eat and worship; all those who go down to the dust, and he who cannot keep alive his own soul, shall bow before him. 31 Their seed shall serve him; it shall be told of the LORD to the coming generation.32 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness to a people that shall be born, that he has done this.

There is nothing about Jesus in this Psalm. The Psalmist is praying to God for help. He complains of being scorned and despised by others. He asks God to save his soul from the sword and describes his enemies as encircling him and seizing his hands and feet like a lion. The Psalmist is clearly a mortal who needs help and who puts his faith in God who does not despise the afflicted. If this is about Jesus as Christians claim, why would he be asking God to save him from the sword? If Jesus was a god he could save himself from the sword, he would not be praying this. The Psalmist also promises to praise God (verse 26), is Jesus going to praise himself? This is nothing to do with Jesus, it is a Psalmist’s petition to God to save him from his enemies.

How am I forgiven without Jesus?

Forgiveness in the Hebrew Bible

The Hebrew Bible does not teach that a sacrifice is the only way to be forgiven. There are verses that make it clear that God is able to forgive people when they have not offered a sacrifice.

Ezekiel 18:21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he has committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22 None of his transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him; in his righteousness that he has done he shall live.

Isaiah 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Jonah 3:10 And God saw their doings, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, which he had said that he would do to them; and he did not do it.

The people of Nineveh repented by stopping the sins they were doing and by asking God to forgive them and that was enough for God to forgive them. Ezekiel and Isaiah taught that God will forgive the sinner who repents. None of these verses mention animal sacrifices.

Who is the LORD? Who is my saviour?

Who is the LORD?

The LORD in the Hebrew Tanakh is YHWH, the supreme deity who is the God of Israel and the whole world. He is known by many names including God, HaShem, Adonai, YHWH and Elohim. The Hebrew Bible does not mention Jesus or teach that he is God. The name of God in the Hebrew Bible is YHWH. Jews and Noahides do not pronounce the name YHWH because it is considered too holy to be pronounced. In most Bible translations, God’s name YHWH is replaced with “LORD” in capitals. Many Christians incorrectly assume that Lord means Jesus because they do not know that it says YHWH in Hebrew.

Who is my saviour?

The Hebrew Bible teaches that YHWH is the only saviour and that it is He who rules the world, though it does not deny that other gods exist/

Isaiah 43:11 I, I myself, am the LORD; and beside me there is no savior. 12 I have declared, and have saved, and I have proclaimed, and there was no strange god among you; therefore you are my witnesses, said the LORD, that I am God.

Psalm 22:28 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the LORD; and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. 29 For the kingdom is the LORD’s; and He is ruler over the nations.

Psalm 95: 3 For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also. 5 The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. 6 O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker.

Psalm 110

Psalm 110 who is the second Lord?

Many Christians believe this verse is proof that there are two lords in this verse, they believe one is the Father and the other one is Jesus. This is not correct.

Psalm 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD says to my master, Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.

The context is about the victory of an earthly king. The first LORD is God, the Hebrew says YHWH. The second Lord (adoni) is the king, most likely David. God is saying to David, who is the master of the Psalmist that He will help him defeat his enemies, he will make the enemies his footstool basically he will trample them in battle.

Proverbs 30:1, who is God’s son?

What is his name and what is His son’s name?

Proverbs 30:4 Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name, if you can tell?

At first glance this may seem like it is saying that God has a physical son, but there are many things that are symbolic in the Hebrew Bible. Israel is called God’s son in the Bible and so is King David and Solomon.

Exodus 4:22 And you shall say to Pharaoh, Thus said the LORD, Israel is my son, my firstborn; 23 And I say to you, Let my son go, that he may serve me; and if you refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay your son, your firstborn.

Psalm 89:21 I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him …….. 28 Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.

1 Chronicles 28:6 And he said to me, Solomon, your son shall build my house and my courts; for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.

This shows that it is talking about a symbolic son, either the nation Israel or an earthly king who was symbolically adopted by God.
